Anyone who’s struggled through their 20s will appreciate this new existential comedy

Imagine if, a decade ago, everyone over the age of 18 gained a unique superpower. Everyone, that is, except you. In Extraordinary, Disney+’s new eight-part series – which has already been confirmed for a second season – that’s the situation of Jen, a painfully self-aware 25-year-old who couldn’t feel more adrift in this souped-up world if she tried. And so, with a little help from her friends, she sets out on a journey to find her maybe-superpower.

“On the surface, this big-hearted British series is about superpowers – or lack thereof – but it’s really about something hugely relatable: the quarter-life crisis,” says Stylist’s digital editor-at-large Kayleigh Dray. “While it’s bloody funny, it also addresses how raw and vulnerable it can feel to see all your friends leapfrog over you into the realms of ‘conventional’ success. In our world, that might look like a slew of engagements, or pregnancies, or property purchases. In Jen’s world, it’s… well, I will leave that for you to find out. Every single one of the talented cast shines but none more so than Máiréad Tyers, who was born to play Jen. I especially loved how the chemistry with her on-screen mum (Derry Girls’ Siobhán McSweeney) and BFF Carrie (Sofia Oxenham) highlights the important role that family and chosen family have in our 20s, too. In short, it’s a big yes from me.” Watch now on Disney+

Follow trainee doctors on the front line in this new high-stakes series

Ever started a new job and felt like you’d been thrown in the deep end? Learning to trust your own gut and just go for it because you have no other choice can be mildly overwhelming. And when other people’s lives depend on your work day, overwhelming is a rather large understatement. Enter your next watchlist recommendation: Emergency: First Time Medics, a new TV series following trainee doctors on the front line as they’re nudged off the diving board into one of the most challenging environments in the NHS.

Airing weekly from tonight at 8pm on W channel, the trainees we meet will quite literally learn on the job: covering complex procedures, delivering difficult news and making quick decisions to support patients during long, demanding shifts. We all have great admiration for healthcare heroes, and with plenty of heart-swelling moments along the way, Emergency: First Time Medics shows with unfiltered honesty exactly how it feels to be at the sharp end of life on the front line.

3 new uplifting installations that are here to brighten the dregs of January

For whoever needs to hear this, there are only six more days until we can finally crawl over January’s finish line – and there’s even less until the first payday of 2023. But if you’re in need of an extra pick-me-up to help you power through, a smattering of free new installations are here to spark some joy. Yet to visit the newly-reopened Battersea Power Station? There’s no better excuse than its impressive Light Festival. Including eight illuminated art pieces, it’s guaranteed to brighten up grey winter days with its biggest outdoor display to date (until 5 March; free; Circus Rd W, London SW11).

Also proving that twinkling bulbs are not just for Christmas, Canary Wharf’s Winter Lights is back for its seventh year with over 20 interactive installations. From Luke Jerram’s giant floating globe to Fisheye’s multi-coloured Permafrost - Sleeping Giants, be sure to download the exhibition map so you don’t miss any quality social media content. And for a touch of childhood nostalgia, Sydney-based design studio Atelier Sisu has bought its whimsical, larger-than-life Evanescent project to the capital. After stints in Melbourne, Sydney, Memphis and Liverpool, the eight-metre-tall iridescent bubbles will be on display outside the City’s Leadenhall Building (aka the Cheesegrater) for two more weeks (until 10 February; free; 122 Leadenhall St, London EC3V). And just like that, the last week of January isn’t looking so bleak after all…
