South London’s cosiest new opening marries indie wine and tasty small plates

Buzzy Herne Hill restaurant Llewelyn’s has long been a favourite of South London foodies, so when it extended its punchy yet pared-back approach to a more casual venue next door late last year, snaffling a table was a priority. A deli offering salads, chunky sandwiches and chic cupboard staples during the day, by night, Lulu’s is a compact wine bar and eatery with a seasonal menu that’s overhauled every few weeks – aka the perfect excuse for a return visit…

“Nestled in a festoon-lit square outside Herne Hill station, I fell for Lulu’s as soon as I spied its cosy candlelit tables,” says Holly Bullock, Stylist’s editorial assistant. “Immediately presented with a bowl of crispy, salty potato matchsticks to snack on while perusing the wine list that’s peppered with lesser-known bottles – including a standout zesty orange wine from indie female-founded Spanish label Parajes del Valle – I was sold. Cocktail fans should try the marmalade martini while pink grapefruit soda makes an excellent stand-in for dry January. With each small plate that emerged – orange-spiked puntarelle, goat’s curd and figs on toast, deep green polenta verde – the flavoursome line-up outdid itself every time. Friendly, unfussy but chic enough that I’d recommend it to my coolest friends, I’d virtually sell my soul to live next door.” 291 Railton Rd, London SE24

If this year’s pop culture is anything to go by, tennis is the new Formula 1

When the first series of Formula 1: Drive To Survive hit screens in 2019, it catapulted the motorsport into the global spotlight like never before: racking up millions of views, attracting countless new fans and even inspiring our wardrobes (hello, #motorcore). Now, tennis is in for the same treatment, with the first five episodes of Break Point – a 10-part docuseries by the same team as Drive To Survive – debuting on Netflix today, trailing a group of seeded tennis stars as they combat the reality of life on tour.

The streaming platform isn’t the only one to thrust the sport into the world of pop culture. Apple TV recently announced a new two-part documentary on Boris Becker, having followed the tennis legend for three years in the lead-up to his April 2022 prison sentence for financial fraud. Meanwhile, after the success of 2021’s King Richard, the sport is being given the silver screen treatment once more in this summer’s release of the Zendaya-led Challengers, after BookTok’s favourite author Taylor Jenkins Reid also featured the tennis theme in her latest novel Carrie Soto Is Back (£16.99, Cornerstone). One to add to your summer holiday book list if you haven’t already read it – while sunning yourself at Rafael Nadal’s soon-to-open lifestyle hotel ZEL in Mallorca, naturally.
