This claustrophobic new thriller comes with a covert message you won’t be able to ignore

What happens when the inhabitants of a remote Scottish oil rig are suddenly cut off from outside world? The Rig, Amazon’s big-budget, high-intensity new series is about to reveal all – in the most spine-chillingly eerie way possible. Terse relationships are revealed as the Kinloch Bravo crew, including conflicted communications officer Fulmer (Line Of Duty’s Martin Compston), crew leader Magnus (Game Of Thrones’ Iain Glen), and Rose, a steely oil company representative played by Schitt’s Creek’s Emily Hampshire, prepare to travel home. But then an unexplainable fog descends and a hauntingly sinister sense of chaos starts to take hold.

“Initially, you’ll think you’re settling into a Vigil-esque drama exploring the complex dynamics that develop in the rig’s claustrophobia,” says Stylist’s editorial assistant Holly Bullock. “But an hour later, you realise you’re in for something infinitely more shocking as the first episode reaches its foreboding climax. Spotlighting an often-untold side of Scottish industry – it’s Amazon’s first original series filmed exclusively in Scotland – The Rig has genuinely hair-raising moments aplenty (including a particularly odious twist for Fulmer), fascinating character dynamics that leap from jovial to hostile with unsettling ease and, ultimately, a climate crisis-focused message that feels neither preachy nor farfetched. Prepare to binge all six episodes hand over mouth in one breathless evening.” Watch on Amazon Prime Video now

This must-watch docuseries is refreshingly honest on IVF struggles

Every once in a while a TV show hits our screens that has the power to shift something within us – and presenter Alex Jones’ affecting new series deserves top billing on your new year watchlist this month. Alex Jones: Making Babies sees The One Show host swap the green sofa for scrubs as she gains a fertility assistant qualification and reports with searing honesty on the highs and lows of going through IVF at one of the busiest fertility centres in the UK.

Our fertility journeys are both acutely personal and, in small ways, comfortingly universal, yet there is still a silence that surrounds trying for a baby – and this docuseries starts a refreshingly honest conversation about conceiving. As Alex bonds with couples undergoing a life-altering chapter at King’s Fertility in London, we see it all: from the counting of embryos and the testing of fertility levels, to collecting eggs, injecting sperm to stimulate pregnancy and delivering news to the inspiring individuals. Alex had her own struggles getting pregnant with her second child and her work on the project ensures an unfiltered account of the reality of going through IVF. Airing weekly on W channel, with episodes available for catch-up on UKTV Play, this is essential viewing on a topic close to all our hearts – a must-watch this January.
