This must-see film focuses on the women who bravely spoke out against Harvey Weinstein

When two journalists from The New York Times broke their searing 2017 investigation into allegations of sexual abuse and harassment by Hollywood film director Harvey Weinstein, the ripple effects were seismic. Millions shared their stories using the hashtag #metoo (coined by activist Tarana Burke) and Weinstein was eventually sentenced to 23 years in prison. Five years later, She Said – in cinemas today – delves into the investigation and the efforts of journalists Jodi Kantor (Zoe Kazan) and Meghan Twohey (Carey Mulligan) to convince Weinstein’s victims to go on the record. Director Maria Schrader keeps the voices of the survivors front and centre – including Ashley Judd playing herself – and probes how Weinstein’s predatory behaviour was enabled and covered up.

“Watching it, I became increasingly furious about what had been allowed to fester and it’s easy to think that the prevalence of #MeToo tied everything up with a neat bow,” says Stylist’s entertainment director Helen Bownass. “But while the movement brought much of the horror out of the darkness and enacted change, this honed, quietly potent film is a vital reminder of the risk taken in calling truth to power and that taking action against such a monstrous abuse of influence must remain an active process until its impact is felt across all of society – not just in Hollywood.” In cinemas now
