Modern paint collections are the satisfying, stylish way to update your home

Picture this: you’re nine years old and you’ve just moved the furniture around in your bedroom, having recently discovered the concept of feng shui. Few things replicate the euphoria of a youthful room switch-up, but giving something a fresh lick of paint comes close – whether you’re redoing your living room walls in a bright shade or just want to update tired picture frames with a sample pot. And thanks to an influx of covetable independent brands and new collaborations, there’s never been a chicer colour palette to choose from.

Lick x Soho House’s new edit of eight paint colours is inspired by the private members’ club’s global locations, including Dean Street’s distinctive teal and the warm pink of Nashville House (samples £1.50; £42 for 2.5 litres). Interiors maven and Glassette co-founder Laura Jackson recently launched a collaboration with Surrey-based brand Coat, a sophisticated range of beiges, pastels and bold-yet-muted tones designed to bring Parisian charm to British walls (£26 per litre). We also love feel-good paint company YesColours, which produces mood-coded collections like Joyful (positivity-inspiring minty green, sunset orange and playful lilac) and the softer shades of Calming (samples £4.50; £21 per litre). Finally, Zhoosh’s UK-made eco-conscious range of 26 grown-up colours (think earthy terracotta and slate-toned blue) is top of our list for rooms that need a little zhuzhing (samples £1; £40 for 2.5 litres). Time to get the rollers out.

This vibrant new exhibition is the mood boost we need right now

From a Lego laundrette in Bethnal Green to rainbow zebra crossings on Tottenham Court Road and colour-block basketball courts in Canary Wharf, there’s a strong chance you’ve walked past (or over) Yinka Ilori’s work while dashing around London. The British-Nigerian artist and designer’s trademark blend of lively colour and angular geometry is instantly uplifting – which is lucky, as he opens his first museum display in a week when we could all do with a reason to smile.

Launching today at the Design Museum, Parables For Happiness is a free exhibition celebrating key elements of Ilori’s distinctive aesthetic and inspirations, from the African fabrics of his childhood to the north London community where he grew up. You’ll have the chance to peruse 100 objects, ranging from Ilori’s own-design furniture and textiles to the trousers he wears while painting. And to coincide with the joy-inducing exhibit, Ilori has created a vibrant pop-up facade for Bulgari Hotel London in Knightsbridge, and collaborated on a special edition afternoon tea served in the hotel lounge (available from 23 September). Bright spots in grey times. Exhibition on display until June 2023; free; Kensington High St, W8; designmuseum.org
