In a city like London which boasts one of the largest, most vibrant cultural scenes in the world, it may come as a surprise that there is no space dedicated to LGBTQ+ history – not just in the capital, but the entire UK. That is, until now. Four years in the making, Queer Britain opens its doors today, dedicated to celebrating stories, people and places related to the queer community. After decades of being largely left out of the history books, the museum will shine a much-needed light on the diverse history and culture of LGBTQ+ people throughout the UK and beyond.

Launching with a temporary display that will be on show until 4 July ahead of a debut exhibition this summer, Welcome to Queer Britain will act as an introduction to the museum and the charity behind it. Alongside Alia Romagnoli’s heartwarming images from 2019’s Chosen Family exhibition, Allie Crewe’s poignant portraits of transgender and non-binary people from her You Brought Your Own Light collection and award-winning works by Sadie Lee and Paul Harfleet on the theme of queer creativity, you can also immerse yourself in reportage photos which portray the UK’s struggle for LGBTQ+ rights, including the first openly lesbian MP Maureen Colquhoun holding a defiant ‘The MPs must come out’ placard in 1977 plus compelling scenes from Scotland’s first same-sex marriages in 2014 and Gay Pride parades across the decades. True crime, whodunnits and an ominous husband take centre stage in highly-anticipated drama, The Staircase, which explores 2001’s perplexing death of Kathleen Peterson (Toni Collette) and the family saga that ensued. When the 48-year-old is found dead at the bottom of the stairs in their house, her husband Michael (Colin Firth) deems it a tragic accident. But the 35 cuts, bruises and lacerations allude to anything but. As suspicions point to Michael, their façade as a happily married couple with a perfectly blended family starts to crumble.
