Sip on classic cocktails with an Indian twist at this slick new Soho bar

The speakeasy is back, thanks to a glossy new basement bar tucked away in the heart of Soho. Down a dimly lit staircase thick with the smell of incense, you’ll find SOMA: the latest offering from the team behind buzzy Indian restaurant group Kricket. Drinking here is all about minimalistic luxury – the cocktails come with no bells and whistles, just high-quality (and often surprising) ingredients, with an ethos that’s all about sustainability and low waste. You won’t see bunches of wilting mint or wasted orange peels behind the bar, only top shelf spirits, bottles of homemade essences and jars of fermented pickles to snack on.

“SOMA is a grown-up place to have a drink,” says Stylist’s features editor Meena Alexander. “Its shadowy corners and polished wood create a real sense of intimacy, and its bartenders welcome you like old friends. But the cocktail menu – small and perfectly formed, with Indian-inspired twists on all the classics – is the star of the show. If you love a margarita, try the chaat: a delicious blend of mezcal and tequila flavoured with chaat masala, kumquat and gooseberry salt. The most mind-blowing creation for me, though, was the spin on a gimlet – a silky gin cocktail with pink peppercorn oil, kaffir and curry leaves that was so special, I had to take an at-home mixing kit away with me.” Cocktail aficionados, do not pass GO, do not collect $200. 14 Denman St, London, W1D

Bolu Babalola’s TV pilot is a refreshingly funny coming-of-age story about friendship and ambition

Finding your place in the world – while also navigating parental expectations and having to earn a living – is the focus of Big Age, the TV pilot by Love In Colour author and Twitter celebrity Bolu Babalola that debuts tonight. Focussing on Ṣadé (Ronkẹ Adékoluẹjo) who’s celebrating her 25th birthday and having a meltdown about how to achieve her dreams of becoming a writer, we also meet her free-spirited best friend Dela (Racheal Ofori), her unrequited (and undeserving) love Zeke (Michael Workeye), and her old school friend Tayo (CJ Beckford). “There’s some wonderfully sharp, well-observed writing in this coming-of-age story that had me snorting,” says Stylist’s entertainment director Helen Bownass. “Such as this conversation: ‘Today is the first day of your new life, child,’ says Dela. ‘I’m three months older than you,’ replies Ṣadé. ‘But remember my psychic said I’d had three more past lives than you,’ retorts Dela, without missing a beat.”

Babalola’s pilot is part of Channel 4’s Black To Front Project which is dedicated to showcasing Black talent throughout today. Highlights include this morning’s revival of The Big Breakfast presented by AJ Odudu and Mo Gilligan, Spice Girl Melanie Brown presenting Mel’s Packed Lunch at 12:30pm and a special episode of Gogglebox featuring Drag Race UK stars Tia Kofi and Tayce plus model Jourdan Dunn and her brother Antoine at 9pm. Here’s hoping this won’t just be a one-off day of diversity, but the springboard for a moment of lasting change in centering Black voices.
