This moving indie film asks big questions about pregnancy and parenting

How, when and why a woman chooses to have a child – or not – is rarely straightforward. But in new film The Surrogate, protagonist Jess (played with bucketloads of charm by newcomer Jasmine Batchelor) is cheerfully certain that she wants to help her friends Josh and Aaron by carrying their baby. In fact, she’s remarkably relaxed about the whole thing – until prenatal tests reveal the baby has a 99% chance of being born with Down’s syndrome. Suddenly, Josh and Aaron are doubting their ability to raise this particular child, and Jess is facing an unexpected ethical dilemma.

The Surrogate tackles huge moral questions with subtlety and nuance,” says Stylist Loves’ deputy editor Moya Crockett. “Josh and Aaron aren’t demonised for worrying about the future, and Jess – who starts wondering whether she could raise the baby as her own – is neither hero nor villain. Instead, she’s an idealistic, empathetic, frustrated and frustrating millennial who realises selflessness is nowhere near as simple as she’d assumed. With a gloriously atmospheric Brooklyn setting, this is definitely a film to watch with others – because you’ll have lots to discuss afterwards.” In select UK cinemas now

“The Best Thing I’ve Ever Bought”
Writer and broadcaster Otegha Uwagba, author of new book We Need To Talk About Money, shares the one thing that brings her immense joy

“I love food: it’s the main thing I research before I travel, and I love going out for dinner. But I’m a lazy cook. Deciding what to make, going to the supermarket, figuring out how to reuse that leftover bit of aubergine in the fridge – I just don’t feel like I have the time. After I moved into a flat on my own in January, I realised I wasn’t eating proper balanced meals, and a friend recommended Gousto delivery boxes.

“They send you all the ingredients you need for a certain number of meals – I usually get four a week – plus recipe cards. It’s been life-changing. At first I thought, oh god, is this a bit indulgent? But the price is on par with what I was spending at the supermarket anyway, there’s no food waste, and it clears brain space for me to focus on things that aren’t cooking. I don’t use this expression loosely, but I do think making sure I’m properly fed and nourished is a form of self-care. It makes me feel healthy, relaxed and more in control, and I’m constantly grateful whenever I reach into the fridge.” Gousto recipe boxes, from £24.99 per box, gousto.co.uk
