Back in March, amid a wave of hate crimes against Asian-Americans, eight people – six of them women of Asian descent – were killed in a series of mass shootings in Georgia. The violence captured the world’s attention, but sadly, it wasn’t specific to the US. In May 2020, MPs were told that hate crimes against the East and South-East Asian (ESEA) community had risen by 21% in the UK, fuelled by xenophobia related to the Covid-19 pandemic.
In light of these disturbing statistics, Londoners Claire Sachiko Fourel and Lex Shu Chan (aka Sachiko & Shu) have launched online charity cookbook Recipes Against Racism. Bringing together recipes from some of London’s leading Asian and Asian-influenced restaurants and supper clubs – including Chinese Laundry, Farang, Lucky & Joy, Kiln and Sarap – the book is both a beautiful celebration of Asian food and culture and a practical way to support the UK ESEA community, with 100% of proceeds going to anti-racism charities End the Virus of Racism and Stop Hate UK.
